Why Blinds Have Advantages Over Curtains

When you are decorating a room, just updating a look or furnishing a new house one of your main considerations will be window coverings. The main two choices you have are curtains and window blinds. It can be a difficult choice as they have advantages over each other but here is why we think blinds are the best choice.

  1. With blinds you can control the light that comes into a room a lot easier.

Blinds provide you with more options over the light that comes into a room. With curtains you pretty much have open or shut with maybe the option to open one curtain. How many times have you sat in a chair and each time the sun moves you have had to get up adjust one of the curtains and then got up and down all afternoon so you can see the screen. You don’t want to completely shut them as you then feel as you are missing out on the daylight. With blinds you have a lot more control, you can adjust them at an angle so the light still comes in but it blocks the sun from one side or at a particular height depending on which type of blind you have. You can fully open them, shut them or have them at various angles in between. This is particularly important in rooms with screens be it a television or a computer.

  1. So many different colours and styles to choose from

Many people see the fact that you can get curtains in any fabric as an advantage but this is also true for blinds. You can get blinds made in a very wide range of colours, patterns and styles so you can create exactly the look you are after. The extra advantage over curtains is that you also get to choose the type of blind be it vertical blinds, roman blinds, roller blinds or something else.

  1. Wide Variety of Materials

So curtains come in fabric we all pretty much know that. Blinds can also come in fabric but you also have a choice of so many other materials. You can choose wood, metal, plastic or even faux wood or metal and they all come in a variety of colours, sheens and grains. You can vary the width of the slats also so they are totally bespoke to what you are looking to achieve.

  1. Extra Privacy

We have seen above that blinds are flexible when it comes to the amount of light that you want to come into a room. Well the same is true for privacy. If the flow of traffic outside the house is one way then you can adjust them to face the other way. You could choose top down blinds where the top half folds down so you have light coming in but no one can see into the house. Also even when you have the blind’s slats open it is much harder to see in as it distorts the view.

  1. Maintenance is easy

Curtains can be hard to clean, sure you can hoover them but if you want to wash them you may have to get them dry cleaned or at least put them in the washing machine, iron them and rehang them which is not the easiest of jobs. With most blinds a quick dust or wipe and they are as good as new. The blinds will stay as good as new for years and years especially if you have wooden or metal blinds; they can last a lifetime! Just keep them until you want to change the look of the room and then replace them.

  1. Cost

Curtains can be very expensive if you want good fabrics as they use a lot of fabric. Fabric blinds use far less material and are therefore much cheaper. As stated before if you want wooden blinds and can’t afford them then faux wood is available which is much more cost effective and looks just like the real thing.

How to choose blinds for your windows and doors

Blinds add style to a room, they can be tailor made to fit with any colour scheme and can fit any window opening. They don’t have the bulkiness of curtains so can sit a lot neater against your window and can even be integrated into the window or door by way of our perfect fit blinds.

The other main consideration with blinds is that they can be adjusted, depending on the type of blind used, to allow just the right amount of light into a room or to block out the sun if that is needed.

There are a lot of styles of blind and choosing the right one will depend on the situation in which you are using them. We will go through the types of blinds available and let you know the advantages of each to help you make the right choice for your room.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are very popular and consist of horizontal slats that will usually be made of wood or aluminium or aluminium that is made to look like wood. You can raise or lower the blind and adjust the slats to control the light entering the room. They are suitable for any room but especially work well in smaller room as the horizontal slats give the impression of height making the room look larger than it may be. This is a trick used by many a home designer.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are similar to venetians but the slats or panels are vertical. They can be pulled back to let full light in, closed to block out light or adjusted to face either way to stop sunlight annoying people in the room. They will be normally made of fabric which is still easy to clean and look after. The polyester fabric will also not fade in the sunlight so you can choose any colour you wish in the knowledge that they will last for years to come.

They are normally a good value choice and can cover large expanses of window without a problem. They are a good choice for offices or TV viewing rooms as you can keep the sun off a TV screen or computer screen and still let light into the room.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are made of fabric and you can raise them by taking advantage of folds in the fabric. They are cheap and can be very colourful as you can choose from a wide range of fabrics.

Roller blinds

Roller blinds have a pulley system to one side that lets your roll the blind fabric up and down. You can have the blind at any height so the blind can be fully open or shut or anywhere in between.

Blackout Blinds

All the above are available in blackout material so the room is kept in total darkness which is ideal if the room is used as a bedroom so you don’t get woken up by the light too early in the morning.
